Castelnuovo Don Bosco DOC
“A winery with distinctive soils, greyishblue marly, clayey. Hence the wines produced by Gianni Vergano (he founded it in 1983) are generally quite structured, like this Barbera with blackberry notes and a soft, enveloping texture with a long, savoury finish.”
“Gianni Vergnano is considered an istitutional presence inside the guide. His position is not to be mistaken as a legacy, but the confirmation of a constant effort of being interpreter of very high levels of this area of Monferrato, overlooking the hillside of Turin province. Last bulwark of a winemaking history who Giovan Battista Croce, already in the 15°century announced of high quality. Real flagship of the region […]”
“Arvelé Freisa d’Asti Superiore DOC. Wine with an intense ruby red color and very noble aromas. Freisa is the true wine of the nobles,”wine of elegance”. It has a fruity, intense and vigorous nose, a bouquet that does not push and does not trivialize the fruit, it is a refined hint of dark fruit, ripe but crunchy. In the mouth there is heat, alcohol, correct tannic structure. The light note of wood gives structure and longevity. Compact wine, where the alcoholic part is vigorous and compares well with the dish. Long and decisive sip, which knows how to mix elegance even with a remarkable ease of drinking.”
Climate has changed Freisa, it not the same as in the eighties. Now is aged as great wines. Cascina Gilli is a estate with a beauty of a movie set. Since 1983 is managed by the charismatic Gianni Vergnano (now together with his son Paolo), which contributed at the recover of indigenous grapes of the area. He moves between property cellars and vineyards covered by ocher shades, with a royal elegance. And it is not by coincidence that when he talks about Freisa – the grape – he name it “Princess”.
“Dedica Barbera d’Asti Superiore. Robe grenat vif, reflets évolués. Nez charmeur, fruits à noyau mûrs, foin, moka, quelques épices. Au palais une splendide ampleur gouleyante, fondue, veloutée, de jeunes parfums énergiques, précis, tenaces, une sensation naturelle et harmonieuse. Bravo. 92/100 pt”
“Freisa’s different company labels remain the touchstone for the various types. […] The wines presented by Cascina Gilli are all marked by a beautiful immediacy and pleasantness, starting from Freisa d’Asti “Il Forno”, with spicy tones with notes of cherry, to Barbera d’Asti “Le More”, all played on notes of wild berries, up to the Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco, aromatic and sweet at the same time, not at all cloying, indeed fresh and easy to drink.”
“Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco. Robe rubis vif, présence gazeuse. Nez plaisant mêlant raisin frais, petits fruits rouges. Bouche aérienne, riche, douce, affichant une agréable franchise aromatique, jolie densité granulée, une friandise irrésistible à decouvrir, bien refraîchie. 87/100″
In the eighties Gianni Vergnano took a decision which to many seemed an hazard not to say foolish risk: enhancing the wines of the Asti area that belongs to Castelnuovo Don Bosco. Fortunately, his Freisa frizzante had an immediate success, not only among those who were tied to local traditions in time, but also among young people, thus allowing the company to carry out its project on an increasingly solid basis ” .
“In just 4 years of activity Gianni Vergnano proved his great deal of respect for the winemaking local tradition, but also of having his own ideas to affirm. The result is first of all the production of 2 types of Freisa (which we had the chance to review on our first edition of the guide). To which has been now added a new product from 1988, Freisa with a brief ageing in wood barrel and particularly a Malvasia, produced from a recently aquired vineyard. […] More than interesting attempt to restore some dignity to a product which in the area has had noble traditions”.
